The Alternate Volume is a student created platform that writes about the complexities and challenges ethnic minorities in China face. In face of a dominant cultural narrative backed by the government, we want to offer an alternative source of information that prioritizes the perspectives of minority peoples. We hope to address issues such as political persecution, cultural homogenization, and economic inequality, three issues that are prominent in autonomous regions of China.
Starting in 2022, we have connected with over 16 ethnic communities spread across 3 autonomous regions. Learning about ethnic communities in dept from interviewing people from the Mongolian, Dai, Wa, Hani, Blang community, we want to spread these peoples’ life stories so that more people can gain a more comprehensive understanding of the situation in China.
